It’s from an action of Indaver that Antwerp will be the home of chemical recycling. The company decided to start recycling yoghurt pots and foam trays made of polystyrene (PS) and expanded polystyrene (XPS) in a new factory.

 The new factory will be a key player in the recycling process of packaging in Belgium. It’s estimated that around 3.000 tons of PS coming from PMD household waste will be chemically recycled.

Until now PS has been recycled mechanically, this process did not allow the reuse of this material in food packaging, while the new process will expand the horizons of this material.

Concerning the XPS, the recycling of this material is particularly difficult because the packages often get thrown away in wrong bins or, if they arrive in the PMD, they often skip the recycling chain because of their color (black).
Chemical recycling will allow to reuse PS in many outcome solutions, helping the PPWR to expand and succeed.

The plan of Indaver will take off this year, with an input capacity of 26.000 tons of PS, while from 2027, the capacity will increase to 65.000 tons.
