The UK’s department for environment, food & rural affairs announced that the implementation of the new EPR system will be delayed until October 2025.

The EPR (Extended producer Responsibility) is a system that would replace the current producer responsibility system for packaging. The proposal was introduced in March 2022 and its guideline published in June, 2022. These guideline is outlining who may be affected and what actions are need to be taken. 

Furthermore, the Guidance of November, 2022 (updated in June, 2023) focuses on the different packaging data that those organizations need to collect, like f.i. data on following categories: packaging activity, packaging type (ex. household or non-household), packaging class (primary, secondary, shipment or tertiary), packaging material and weight.

On July 23, 2023, the UK Government, together with Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland opened a consultation on the draft regulation for EPR. The summary of this consultation stipulates that a delay in implementing the EPR for packaging payments leads to opportunities such as more time for authorities and waste management companies to adjust their business to the regulation and for the industry to be prepared for the new requirements, which may include reviewing and improving current packaging use.
