On the 22nd of November the European Parliament adopted more than 300 amendments on the proposal for a regulation on packaging and packaging waste (PPWR).
The amended text was approved by the MEPs with 426 votes in favour, 125 against and 74 abstentions.
Besides editorial modifications and clarification of certain definitions and articles, the amendments concerned also, among others:
The assessment of the need for requirements regarding recycled content for packaging made of materials other than plastic.
The ban of placing food contact packaging on the market containing intentionally added per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) or intentionally added bisphenol A.
Adaption of the text regarding the minimum percentage of recycled content recovered from post-consumer plastic waste, per packaging format.

At this moment we are still in the 1st reading stage of the procedure. Now the Parliament adopted the amended text, the next step is the Council to adopt the Parliaments position, in which case the legislative act is adopted. However, the Council may adopt also a different position at this first reading and communicate it to Parliament for a second reading.
