[2002] published one of the very first papers on active and intelligent packaging. These authors provided us with the following definitions. Active packaging changes the conditions of the packaged food to extend its shelf-life or improve food safety or sensory properties, while maintaining the quality of the packaged food, whereas intelligent packaging systems monitor the conditions of the packaged foods and inform about its quality during transport and storage..."
