ADR 2025 – FOCUS ON POSITIONING OF UN MARK

Last month we announced the publication of  the new version of ADR for 2025. For all companies interested in the transportation of Dangerous Goods, we wanted to draw the attention on a specific section of this new version of ADR.

The paragraph which includes an important revision is the 6.1.3.1. It states as follows:

“Each packaging intended for use according to the ADR shall bear marks on a non-removable component which are durable, legible and placed in a location and of such a size relative to the packaging as to be readily visible. For packages with a gross mass of more than 30 kg, the marks or a duplicate thereof shall appear on the top or on a side of the packaging. Letters, numerals and symbols shall be at least 12 mm high, except for packagings of 30 l capacity or less or of 30 kg maximum net mass, when they shall be at least 6 mm in height and except for packagings of 5 l capacity or less or of 5 kg maximum net mass when they shall be of an appropriate size.”

The part highlighted in bold is a new addition to the ADR. This specific sentence obliges producers to use the mark on a non-removable component of the packaging; the UN mark on the removable lid won’t be compliant with the new rules.

The transition time is mentioned in paragraph 1.6.1.57. and reads as follows: all packagings manufactured before 1 January 2027 and which do not conform to the requirements of the paragraph 6.1.3.1 regarding the affixing marks on non-removable components applicable as from 1 January 2025 may continue to be used.
