New standards – Circular Economy

On May 22, 2024, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) launched three new standards in the field of Circular Economy, all part of the ISO 59000 series. These standards aim to provide a comprehensive framework for organizations transitioning to sustainable business practices.

The newly published standards include:

  • ISO 59004: Circular economy – Vocabulary, principles and guidance for implementation. This standard establishes the terminology, principles, and guidelines for implementing circular economy practices across various organizations.
  • ISO 59010: Circular Economy – Guidance on the transition of business models and value networks. This standard facilitates the shift from linear to circular business models, supporting organizations in redesigning their value networks.
  • ISO 59020: Circular economy – Measuring and assessing circularity performance. This standard provides a framework for measuring and assessing circularity, enabling organizations to evaluate their progress in adopting circular practices.

In parallel, Europe is working on developing new standards tailored to its regulatory framework, with some future standards based on these ISO norms. The European standards committee, CEN/TC 473, has begun these efforts, focusing on creating standards that address circular economy requirements specific to the European context. The Belgian standards committee NBN/I323 invites experts from diverse sectors, including academia, industry federations, private companies, and government bodies, to contribute to these initiatives.

These developments highlight the growing importance of standardized approaches to fostering a circular economy, both globally and within Europe.
